Founded in 2020, Synonym is building the world’s first digital free-market society, including any necessary R&D required to deliver “The Atomic Economy.” The Atomic Economy is a civic-engineering initiative to replace traditional institutions with open protocols and products that empower individuals.

Our current products include Pubky (self-sovereign identity & open social graph), Pubky Ring (Pubky keychain & auth), Bitkit (Bitcoin & Lightning wallet), and Blocktank (Lightning Service Provider). Each product demonstrates building blocks for a new society. Synonym is an entirely remote team working to bring new integrated products to open source protocols and cutting-edge peer-to-peer technology.

About the Role

We’re seeking a Senior Rust Engineer to join our growing Pubky team. You will play a vital role in designing, building, and maintaining our core products, with a particular focus onPubky Core and Pubky Nexus. This position is perfect for a self-driven individual who is ready to contribute to high-impact projects, ensure code quality, and contribute to core product development.

Responsibilities

Design & Development: Architect, develop, and maintain robust Rust-based solutions for our core products and protocols.

Integration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., product, UX, QA) to ensure seamless integration of new features and improvements into existing systems.

Code Quality: Perform code reviews, implement best practices, and maintain high standards of code quality and documentation.

Scalability & Performance: Optimize applications for maximum speed, reliability, and scalability, ensuring efficient resource usage.

Innovation: Stay informed about emerging libraries, and industry trends; proactively suggest and implement improvements or new approaches.

Security & Reliability: Work closely to protect user data and maintain system integrity.

Skills and Qualifications

Expertise in Rust: Proven experience building production-grade applications or systems in Rust.

Systems Programming: Comfortable working with low-level systems, concurrency, and performance optimization.

Data & APIs: Familiarity with database management, RESTful APIs, and related technologies.

Problem-Solving Mindset: Ability to break down complex challenges into manageable tasks and deliver scalable solutions.

Collaboration: Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a fully remote team setting.

Version Control: Proficient with Git or similar tools for source code management.

Bonus Skills

Cryptography: Practical knowledge of cryptographic techniques, protocols, and secure data handling.

Server Protection: Experience building secure systems, protecting servers from potential threats, and designing robust access controls.

Decentralized / P2P Systems: Exposure to peer-to-peer architectures and protocols.

Blockchain / Bitcoin: Experience with Bitcoin or other blockchain technologies.

Dex Social Technologies: Prior work on decentralized or federated social platforms like Nostr, Mastodon, Bluesky, etc.
